Fiat 500 vs. Mini Cooper
Both the Fiat 500 and the Mini Cooper are compact cars that are designed to be fun and economical to use in the city environment. Both of these cars also have their origins in models that were considered design classics, but have recently been recreated in modern versions that bring together new technology with elements of the old style.
The original Fiat 500 was created in 1957, a little earlier than the first version of the Mini, which was produced in 1959. Both cars were very popular during the 1960s and 1970s, and they have remained so to this day. The Fiat 500's popularity has been most enduring in its native Italy, while the Mini has remained most popular in its own home country, the United Kingdom. Many people still use the old versions of these cars today, and each vehicle has become an iconic part of the culture of its own country. The new Mini Cooper was launched in 2001. Fiat followed with the launch of its new Fiat 500 in 2007.
The new versions of both cars offer a wide range of different options for customization, so that the owners can create the look that they want for their vehicles. Both of the new vehicles have modernized the design of the cars, making them slightly larger, while retaining the essential shape and style of the older versions. They have also updated the technology to create more powerful, modern vehicles.
The increase in size in the new Mini Cooper was much more significant than that in the new Fiat 500, which is almost the same size as the original, just slightly longer. The new Fiat is six inches shorter and just over two inches narrower than the new Mini, but the differences in design make it look a lot smaller than the Mini Cooper. However, the 500 is actually taller than the Mini, by a little over three inches. The new Mini has more space inside, particularly in the luggage compartment, but the new Fiat 500 has a sleeker profile, with a steeper slop at the rear of the vehicle.
Everything about the new Fiat 500 is small and sweet, while the new Mini is cute in a different way, with larger features such as headlights that appear outsized compared to the body of the car. Both of the new cars have centrally placed antennas at the rear of the roof, but while the Fiat 500 has a short antenna, the one on the new Mini is huge. Other design features that set the new Mini apart from the new 500 are its contrasting colors, with the body, the roof and the fender flares and side skirts being different colors. From the front or in profile, the two cars look very different, but from the rear, they actually look very similar.
The interiors of the cars are also very different. According to The Mini Car Blog, the Mini has retained its traditional layout, with the centrally placed speedometer that has become a trademark of the brand. Many drivers find that the layout in the Fiat 500 is more convenient and easier to understand.
The new Fiat 500 was originally only available in Europe, but as it moves into the American market, it will come into more competition with the new Mini Cooper. The new Mini Cooper tends to be more expensive than the new Fiat 500, however, so the two cars do not always compete directly. The two vehicles experienced a similar relationship during their first incarnations, when the old Fiat 500 was a cheaper competitor for the old Mini.
Both the Fiat 500 and the Mini Cooper have also competed with the Volkswagen Beetle, another vehicle, which is considered iconic and which has recently been reinvented in a new form. The old Fiat 500 was a rear engine vehicle, just like the old Beetle, but both of the modern versions of these cars have switched to a front engine.
